Sustainability has always been one of the main focuses of Just Us!
We go above and beyond our 100% Fair Trade, 100% Organic products
We strive to serve local and organic products whenever possible in our baked goods and lunch items. We use Speerville organic flour from New Brunswick; we have local, organic vegetables from the valley for our soups and sandwiches. We also offer a selection of vegan goods, such as muffins, soups, samosas, etc. Approximately 90% of our fresh produce is sourced locally.
When it comes to meat and fish, we have a beef chili which is made from local, organic beef as well as a fish chowder which contains haddock (fished in Yarmouth), Salmon (farmed in PEI and Digby) as well as Cod, which is fished locally.
At Just Us! we make a thorough effort to ensure that our waste is properly sorted, i.e. garbage, compost, recyclable, etc.
We use alternative energy sources at our coffeehouse in Grand Pre, including solar panels to power the lights in the museum, and heat our hot water.
We purchase a portion of our energy from greener sources, such as wind power or low impact hydro-electricity from Bullfrog Power.
We have re-introduced native plant species back onto the property surrounding our Grand Pre location.
We have switched to a bulk milk system which has eliminated a large percentage of the waste from empty milk containers.
One of our company vehicles, a VW bug, has also been modified to run on vegetable oil. Our Sales team also recently purchased a Prius hybrid vehicle.
We are committed to using green cleaning supplies in all of our cafes. These include cold water floor cleaner, citrus-based coffee canister cleaner, biodegradable cleaners, etc.
Our cups are 100% compostable which will make a substantial decrease in our waste. Also, these cups are sourced from certified sustainable forests! This is also a good spot to mention that we give a really great deal if you BYOM (bring your own mug) in efforts to promote the use of reusable mugs.
We are early adopters of Atlantic Canada Sustainability Initiative. The ACSI is a collaborative project designed to build capacity and momentum around sustainability in Atlantic Canada using The Natural Step framework as a guide. We signed a project charter committing our organization to take action on sustainability issues and made a commitment to bringing sustainability into the core of our region. The Just Us! Sustainable Development committee members have attended workshops and conferences about The Natural Step
