Cocoa passes through many lands on the "Camino" (which means road or pathway in Spanish) from the farmer to the consumer.
La Siembra Cooperative believes in ethical trading relationships all along the path. Their milk and whey powders are purchased from local dairy cooperatives.
The cornerstone of their products is their Organic and Fair Trade cocoa powder which comes from two fair Trade and Organic cooperatives. Great rich chocolate for all your baking needs.

Contains 100% organic ingredients (with organic cocoa and organic evaporated sugar cane) We hate to think about it but the modern chocolate industry has its roots in the Atlantic slave trade and in many ways have not moved far beyond that. Reports of child slavery in North Africa continue to this day.

Come and watch our chocolatier at work!

We buy our organic cocoa from Fair Trade Cooperatives in Bolivia and Dominican Republic. The El Ceibo (SAY-EE-BO) Co-op in Bolivia was the first certified organic producer in the world. It is named after the majestic and virtually indestructible tree which provides necessary shade for the cocoa trees. It is a perfect symbol for the 600+ small farmers so determined to improve their lives.

The Conacado Co-op in the Dominican Republic has grown much larger with 9,500 members. 60% of their production is certified organic and the co-op has spun off more businesses making wine, liquor, jams and organic fertilizers.

Both co-ops provide benefits to their members well beyond an increased price for their cocoa beans. These include:

  • access to affordable credit
  • improvement of local roads
  • water and recreational facilities
  • health care
  • education
  • promotion and support for organic agriculture

Check out the new window in our Grand Pre facilities.  Our chocolatier, Joey Pittoello,  is creating delicious new chocolate products, as well as a few of our old favourites.
