Breaking the Silence Speaking Tour| Posted on: Nov. 01, 2018
Join us for our fall speaking tour with Marcelo Sabuc Xalcut, National Coordinator of our long-time partner organization, the Highlands Committee of Small-Farmers (CCDA) in Guatemala. He’ll speak throughout the Maritimes from November 4-11th, 2018!
[CCDA Speaking Tour - Poster.v8]
Marcelo is Maya-Kaqchikel from San Lucas Toliman, Sololá and has worked for the CCDA since 2000. As a result of his work with the CCDA, Marcelo has received threats and is a target of criminalization, facing unfounded charges for political reasons.
The CCDA supports 30,000 Indigenous small farmers throughout the country in struggles for access to and defense of land and territory through advocacy, the production of coffee for export and the promotion of sustainable agriculture. The CCDA’s work challenges the status quo in Guatemala, making their members targets of ongoing repression. This year alone, several members of the CCDA and a sister campesino organization (CODECA) have been killed in a wave of attacks against human rights defenders in the country. Despite these circumstances, their struggle for justice continues!
We hope you’ll join us throughout the speaking tour to call for an end to attacks on the CCDA and other human rights defenders in Guatemala, and to call for justice in these cases!
Marcelo will also speak about the current political context and how it impacts organizations such as the CCDA.
