China / Yunnan

In Yunnan, small tea producers from various ethnic minorities (mainly Lahu, Dai and Bu Lang) have formed the Mannong cooperative. These producers still own the usage rights to the ancient tea trees (Camellia sinensis var. assamica). These tea trees grow slowly at the heart of old-growth forests and can reach 26 feet or more in height. In order to harvest the leaves, the tea pluckers have to climb these impressive trees. Processing is then carried out in private homes or in tiny factories. The post-fermented teas called pu’er are a timeless speciality of this region. Mannong is only the second Chinese project to receive the Max Havelaar quality label for fair trade.
