Job Title: Barista
Work Team: Coffeehouses (Retail)
Accountable to: Coffeehouse Team Lead
Status: Full time or Part time
Wage: 4% above minimum wage (starting)
Location: Wolfville & Grand Pre Coffeehouses
Working Relationships: Lead Barista Trainer, All coffeehouse staff, Sales & Customer Service

Purpose & Expectations:
The Barista’s goal is to provide the best possible experience to our customers, through genuine and caring interaction; by providing excellent and consistent drink quality; by facilitating a comfortable and clean atmosphere; through knowledge about our products and the co-op; and by completing day-to-day tasks as required or delegated for the coffeehouse to run smoothly.

Responsibilities & Expectations

  • Provide an exceptional customer service experience to each and every customer
  • Produce and serve quality drinks according to the recipes, standards, and methods as set out by the Lead Barista Trainer
  • Create a welcoming atmosphere by ensuring cleanliness, appropriate light and ambient sound
  • Complete day-to-day duties and shift tasks required – including, but not limited to – proper opening and closing of the coffeehouse, cleaning, stocking and re-stocking supplies and merchandise, providing exceptional customer service, and employing good hygiene and safe food handling practices
  • Maintain professionalism in all working relationships
  • Take an active role in learning about Just Us! products, producers partners, fair trade, & co-operatives
  • Actively participate in a culture of Health and Safety, as outlined in the worker handbook
  • Attend monthly Team meeting (see Coffeehouse Team Meeting Attendance Policy).
  • Attend & participate in educational opportunities
  • Understand and participate effectively in our worker co-operative model
  • Be a strong advocate of Just Us! internally and externally

Working Conditions:

  • Standing for long periods of time
  • Lifting up to 25kg (not necessary for all staff but required of some due to 25kg sugar bags)
  • Continuous contact with wet/hot surfaces
  • Shift work, including weekends, early morning, & late evening hours

Skills & Essential Attributes:

  • Thrives in sales, retail, food service, or customer service roles. Experience an asset.
  • Has a passion for coffee & tea, plus demonstrated knowledge and/or willingness to learn
  • WHMIS required; First Aid and Food Safety Training may be required
  • Experience with or interest in working for a cooperative organization
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to identify problems and find solutions
  • Ability to multi-task and effectively manage time, responsibilities, and priorities
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with a commitment to honest, direct, & constructive dialogue
  • Self- motivated & able to work independently within frameworks, and in a team environment
  • Able to use Word, Excel, Email, POS systems
  • Lifelong learner
