Our Purpose
Beyond our passion for coffee, it was our commitment to social and environmental justice that inspired the launch of Just Us! In 1995, we became Canada’s first fair trade and organic coffee roaster. We envisioned a fairer global trade system—one that fosters equity rather than exploitation. A system that benefits the Global South just as much as the Global North.
Thirty years later, our mission remains strong, and we’ve become a key rural employer in Nova Scotia—proving that business can thrive while putting people and the planet first.

From seed to cup, our coffee is rooted in justice—that’s the Just Us! guarantee. As we grow and evolve, this promise continues to guide every decision we make, ensuring we stay true to our core values. It’s the foundation that made us Canada’s first fair trade organic coffee roaster, and it remains the principle that propels us forward.
We Don’t Stop at Fair Trade
In 2011, Just Us! became the first organic coffee roaster in the world to join the Small Producers Symbol (SPP)—the only fair trade certification fully owned and led by small-scale producers across Indonesia, Africa, and Latin America, the original founders of the fair trade movement.
This partnership reflects our commitment to paying fair prices that account for the social and environmental costs of producing coffee, tea, sugar, and chocolate—allowing farmers and their families to live with dignity, strengthen their communities, and take pride in the quality of their work.
We don’t just meet the SPP standard—we exceed it. Over the past 10 years, we’ve consistently paid 17% to 40% above the SPP minimum for coffee beans. Each year, we also share 10% of any co-op surplus with small producers, funding projects that combat climate change, enhance food security, and drive local economic growth.
This commitment reflects our co-responsibility in the supply chain—ensuring that producers receive fair wages to access healthcare, education, and a dignified life. It’s not about charity; it’s about recognizing the inherent agency of producers and ensuring they are appropriately compensated for their contribution to the global value chain.
